Putney was an ancient Parish in Brixton and prior to the expansion of the city limits was actually in Surrey. It belonged to Mortlake according to the Domesday Book and it was a site for a ferry crossing. The ferry itself transported Cardinal Wolsey in 1529 after his falling out with Henry VIII.
