Barnes is an area in south west London residing in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames. It located roughly six miles north of Charing Cross in the centre of London and is within a loop of the River Thames. A prominent feature of Barnes is the extremely high quality 18th and 19th century houses in its vicinity and is more often than not noted for its historic village area centred around the pond and forming Barnes Village conservation area. The area was originally part of Surrey and appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was owned by the Canons of St Paul of London. The original chapel that was built on the current site was established somewhere around 1100 and 1150 and was subsequently extended in later centuries, several times. Although London plays host to some fantastic, old riverside housing, the oldest can be found on The Terrace, a road laced with Georgian Mansions that are a testament to their era. The Barnes Railway Bridge is a listen edifice, was originally constructed in 1849 and it dominates the river view from The Terrace. A popular and important feature of Barnes is the nature reserve of one hundred and twenty acres, which provides a traditional English rural setting for the area. Strangely enough, the pond emptied itself in 2001 and although a broken drain was suspected, it was never conclusively proven. It has since been restored to full watery goodness.
