Edgware is a town that is situated within London as part of the London Borough of Barnet. It was once an ancient hamlet and parish located in the county of Middlesex, and is now primarily a shopping and residential area that contains a combination of rural, suburban and urban land. It has a shopping centre called The Broadwalk, a library, the Edgware Community Hospital, and two streams that flow into the River Brent. The area was mostly comprised of forest until the 13th century, until inhabitants of the land prospered with production of hay and the selling of cattle throughout the 16th century. By the 17th century, Edgware had become a small market town with trades from butchers, tailors, colliers and brewers. The first Duke of Chandos and most important man in Edgware at this time, James Brydges, erected a palace at Cannons Park in 1713. The late 18th century brought a cattle and pleasure fair to the area, and horse racing was made popular between 1834 and 1855. A railway line was built between Edgware and Finsbury Park in 1867, and a station was built in the area for residents to benefit from. By this time, Edgware specialized in hay production until the turn of the century, when Wright Ltd arrived in the area and manufactured medals for World War 1. In 1932 the parish of Edgware became part of the Hendon Urban District, and the shopping district of the area began to develop to include the cinema, cafes, gym and apartments that it does today.
