Bermondsey is a district in south London and is part of the London Borough of Southwark, surrounded by Rotherhithe, Walworth and Peckham. Although its earliest written record is in the Domesday Book of 1086, there also appears to be a reliable copy of a record which refers to a letter of Pope Constantine (early 8th century) in which a privileges are granted to a monastery in the area. There was strong Norman presence in the area upon their invasion of England as well as the presence of the Knights Templar, who owned land in the district. However, as it developed throughout the years, it undertook some serious changes. Following the great fire of London, the upper classes started to settle in the area and it turned in to a garden suburb of London. Not many buildings survive from this period but one notable exception is the marvellous church of St Mary Magdalen which was completed in 1690. The discovery of a spring led to the area becoming a spa leisure resort as Spa Road attests to. The three and a half miles of riverside in the area were home to warehouses and wharves but suffered some severe damage during the Second World War. However, they were redeveloped and have now been transformed into residential and commercial accommodations, some of the most expensive properties in London. London’s first railway also went through Bermondsey, from Spa Road, which was part of the London Bridge to Greenwich line.
